According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, over 8.7
million cosmetic surgery procedures were performed in 2003. The
number of cosmetic surgery procedures is increasing, with more women
getting plastic surgery in Kentucky than men.
You will want to know that your Kentucky surgeon is experienced and qualified
to perform the operation. Many surgeons have taken special training
and passed exams given by a national board of surgeons. Ask if your
Kentucky surgeon is "board certified" in surgery. Some surgeons
also have the letters F.A.C.S. after their name. This means they
are Fellows of the American College of Surgeons and have passed
another review by surgeons of their surgical practices.
Special skill and knowledge are essential and specialists in Kentucky cosmetic
surgery are competent in the anatomy, physiology, pathology and
basics sciences. The educational profile of Kentucky surgeons is
unique in that it begins with a fully trained and certified surgeon.
Through continued post-residency education training, and experience,
cosmetic surgery is taught and learned across traditional disciplinary
boundaries. The subspecialty fully incorporates the participation
and knowledge from all contributing disciplines to attain a high
level of skill and understanding. Contributing disciplines include
dermatologic surgery, facial plastic surgery, general surgery, plastic
surgery, otolaryngology, oculoplastic surgery, oral-maxillofacial
surgery and other.
If you or a loved one are thinking about having cosmetic surgery,
you need to speak with an experienced Kentucky doctor or surgeon as soon
as posisble. You probably have alot of questions, and chances are
you may be nervous or afraid. Good Kentucky cosmetic surgeons in
your area can help relieve this anxiety and stress. An experienced
cosmetic or plastic surgeon can evaluate your individual
situation and give you their professional advice and opinion. The
fact is, you won't know until you speak with a Kentucky surgeon directly.
Understading Cosmetic Surgery Limitations:
Don't expect perfection.
Have realistic expectations. A cosmetic surgery can reshape
your body, but not your life.
Know the Kentucky cosmetic surgery risks.
Don't do it on the cheap. Pay what it takes for safe cosmetic
surgery.
Make sure your Kentucky cosmetic surgeon is certified by the American
Board of Plastic Surgery.
Do your homework. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably
is.
Tips for Choosing a Kentucky Surgeon:
Check into the experience of the surgeon you are considering.
Does he or she specialize in the cosmetic surgery procedure in which
you are interested?
How many cosmetic surgery procedures of this kind has the
doctor done?
How many is the Kentucky doctor currently performing per year?
Kentucky cosmetic surgery before-and-after pictures can give you some
indication of a surgeon's ability, although you must realize that
they cannot be construed to guarantee the result you will achieve.
Make sure you are comfortable with the personal support between
you and your Kentucky surgeon. You should always feel that your
concerns are being addressed. Do not be satisfied with an incomplete
answer from anyone.
Types of Kentucky Cosmetic Surgery:
Botox
Injections
Some wrinkles are caused when a muscle contracts (tightens up).
Botox is injected through the skin into the muscle with a
needle. The Botox keeps the muscle from contracting. When
the muscle can't contract, the wrinkle doesn't show as much.
Breast
Augmentation
Breast augmentation is an operation to enlarge, or change the shape
of a woman's breasts. This is done by putting saline implants under
the breast tissue or under one of the chest wall muscles. Breast
augmentation surgery is one of the most common surgeries performed
in the US each year, and a majority of patients are very satisfied
with their results.
Breast
Lift
Breast lift is usually performed for drooping breasts, which may
occur after a woman has had children. Mammograms (breast X-rays)
and a routine breast exam are required before breast lift surgery.
Brow Lift
Brow lift procedures correct forehead wrinkling and drooping eyebrows
by tightening the loose skin, removing part of the muscle that is
responsible for the deep vertical frown lines between the brows.
Butt Lift
A butt lift is a procedure to remove excess skin and fat from either
the inner or outer thighs of individuals in whom liposuction alone
will not correct the aesthetic deformity. Candidates for a butt
lift are usually those who have had extreme weight gains and losses
or have developed laxity due to age.
Cellulite
Treatment
Cellulite refers to deposits of body fat, especially on the buttocks,
legs, and thighs. Except for cellulite treatment, there is not a
lot that can be done to get rid of cellulite once it sets in. However,
exercise and weight control can go a long way to prevent the problem
and keep it from getting worse.
Collagen
Injections
Collagen injections enhance the contour of the lips, giving them
a full and well-defined appearance. Collagen is also used to decrease
the appearance of wrinkles or scars.
Chemical
Peel
The chemical peel procedure involves a chemical solution that is
applied to the skin. The solution causes a layer of skin to separate
and peel off. The new, regenerated skin underneath is usually smoother,
less wrinkled, and more even in color than the old skin.
Chin
Augmentation
A chin augmentation is a surgical procedure to reshape or enhance
the size of the chin to restore facial harmony and chin projection.
Facial implants can alter your face to enhance an area or bring
it into balance.
Ear
Surgery
Ear surgery, or otoplasty is performed on adults, adolescents and
children to relieve the mental stress and embarrassment associated
with large or protruding ears by altering the shape and contour
of the ear to complement facial structure and head size.
Eyelid
Lift
Eyelid lift surgery is used to correct drooping upper lids that
make the patient look older or tired or that interferes with vision.
Eyelid repair (blepharoplasty) is sometimes done alone or with other
facial surgery such as a browlift or facelift
Face
Lift
A face lift is a surgical procedure to repair sagging, drooping,
and wrinkled skin of the face and neck. Face lifts performed to
improve visible signs of aging, poor diet, or heredity; it is performed
by removing excess fat, tightening underlying muscles, and redraping
facial and neck skin.
Forehead
Lift
Forehead lift procedures correct forehead wrinkling and drooping
eyebrows by tightening the loose skin, removing part of the muscle
that is responsible for the deep vertical frown lines between the
brows.
Hair
Replacement
Hormonal changes such as menopause can cause both thinning and hair
loss in women. There are a number of hair replacement techniques
that are available, although hair replacement surgery cannot help
those who suffer from total baldness. Candidates for hair replacement
must have a healthy growth of hair at the back and sides of the
head. The hair on the back and sides of the head will serve as hair
donor areas where grafts and flaps will be taken.
Laser
Skin Resurfacing
Laser skin resurfacing removes wrinkles and fine lines that come
from age or sun exposure. Some acne scars also can be treated with
lasers. Unlike a chemical peel, laser skin resurfacing offer precision,
concentrating only on the areas that need treatment. Wrinkles that
in years past would have been considered untreatable can now be
safely removed. Skin should be fully regrown two weeks after treatment.
Lasik
Eye Surgery
Lasik eye surgery is capable of correcting a wide range of nearsightedness
(myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism. Lasik is the
acronym for laser in situ keratomileusis, sometimes referred to
as laser assisted in situ keratomileusis. Lasik eye surgery refers
the use of a laser to reshape the cornea without invading the adjacent
cell layers. In situ is Greek for "in the natural or normal
place." Medically, in situ means confined to the site of origin
without invasion of neighboring tissues. Kerato is the Greek word
for cornea and mileusis means "to shape."
Lip
Augmentation
Enlarging the lips may be accomplished with lip augmentation surgery
or by injecting the lip with a filler material such as collagen
including Zyplast and Cymetra. These fillers can be injected in
an office lip augmentation procedure to give a fuller look to the
vermilion, which is the visible pink portion of the lips. You may
resume normal activities immediately. Collagen injection may provide
lip augmentation for 3 to 6 months, but is not permanent.
Liposuction
Liposuction is the removal of excess body fat by suction with specialized
surgical equipment, typically performed by a plastic surgeon. Liposuction
has achieved the distinction of being the most popular cosmetic
surgical procedure. By removing unwanted deposits of excess fat,
liposuction improves body appearance and smoothes irregular or distorted
body shapes. The liposuction procedure is sometimes referred to
as body contouring.
Nose Job
Cosmetic nose jobs are also known as rhinoplasty. The procedure
can reduce or increase the size of the nose, narrow the span of
the nostrils, change the angle between the nose and upper lip, and/or
change the tip or bridge of the nose. Nose jobs can also correct
some breathing problems. Rhinoplasty involves the resculpting of
the bone and cartilage.
Thigh Lift
A thigh lift is a procedure to remove excess skin and fat from either
the inner or outer thighs of individuals in whom liposuction alone
will not correct the aesthetic deformity. Candidates for a thigh
lift are usually those who have had extreme weight gains and losses
or have developed laxity due to age. The thigh lift removes lax
skin and fat and places the scars in locations that can be hidden
within the bikini line. Like any surgical procedure there are thigh
lift risks and benefits that will be discussed at your consultation.
Tummy Tuck
Tummy tuck surgery is optional surgery to treat flabby, stretched-out
abdominal muscles and skin to improve appearance. Excessive fatty
tissue and loose skin are removed from the middle and lower sections
of the abdomen and the abdominal muscles may be tightened. Note
that this is a different procedure than liposuction. Cosmetic repair
of the abdomen can be helpful in improving appearance, especially
after massive weight gain and loss.
Upper
Arm Lift
With age, upper arm skin can become loose and flabby. Upper arm
lift surgeons will discuss brachioplasty with patients who want
to tighten this skin and look as good as they feel. In some cases
your cosmetic surgeon may suggest that liposuction be used alone
or in conjunction with an upper arm lift to remove excess fat in
the upper arms.
Varicose
Veins
Varicose vein are formed by the dilation of a small group of blood
vessels located close to the surface of the skin. Although they
can appear anywhere on the body, varicose veins are most commonly
found on the face and legs. They usually pose no health hazard but
may produce a dull aching in the legs after prolonged standing.
Weight
Loss Surgery
The Weight Loss Surgery operation works in two ways by decreasing
food intake and by altering food digestion and absorption. First,
the small receiving pouch limits the amount of food that can be
consumed, resulting in an almost immediate sense of satisfaction
and fullness when a patient eats.
